Effective Workplace Interviews
Jesse Hambrick
National Consultant | Criminal Justice Expert | Behavioral Health Advocate| Public Safety Strategist

This presentation provides supervisors and managers with structured guidance on conducting effective workplace interviews, particularly in situations involving safety concerns, misconduct, or reasonable suspicion of drug and alcohol use. It emphasizes preparation, professionalism, observation skills, and documentation while maintaining confidentiality and employee dignity.
A strong focus is placed on body language interpretation, environmental setup, and maintaining control of the interview process while allowing employees space to speak. The presentation reinforces that safety and the well-being of all employees is the primary responsibility of supervisors.
Three Specific Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
1. Conduct Structured and Professional Workplace Interviews
Participants will be able to prepare for, initiate, and manage workplace interviews using appropriate rapport-building techniques, open-ended questioning, and professional documentation while maintaining confidentiality and policy compliance.
2. Identify and Interpret Verbal and Non-Verbal Indicators
Participants will be able to recognize key behavioral cues—including posture, eye contact, physical barriers, emotional responses, and defensive statements—to better assess credibility, stress indicators, and potential impairment.
3. Apply Reasonable Suspicion and Testing Protocols Appropriately
Participants will be able to evaluate triggering incidents, determine whether an act/omission/failure occurred, and correctly apply reasonable suspicion testing guidelines in coordination with HR and leadership.
